India’s rapidly growing esports scene is once again under the spotlight after leading industry voices called for a defining international success capable of transforming competitive gaming into a mainstream sporting force across the country.

The conversation gained momentum after Akshat Rathee, co-founder of NODWIN Gaming, suggested Indian esports needs its own “Neeraj Chopra moment", referencing the Olympic gold medal victory that elevated athletics into the national spotlight.

According to Rathee, a major international esports triumph involving an Indian team or player could dramatically change how competitive gaming is viewed by both the public and investors.

India’s esports industry has experienced explosive growth over the past few years, fueled by mobile gaming, rising internet access and increasing tournament investment. Major titles such as Battlegrounds Mobile India, VALORANT and Counter-Strike continue attracting millions of players and viewers across the country.

Despite the growth, industry leaders believe esports in India still faces challenges surrounding recognition, infrastructure and mainstream acceptance.

While gaming audiences continue expanding, many esports professionals argue that the sector still struggles to receive the same level of respect traditionally given to cricket, football and Olympic sports.

The comparison to Neeraj Chopra carries significant symbolism. Chopra’s Olympic success not only inspired athletes across India but also attracted major sponsorships, media attention and government support for athletics development.
